I visited Sikkim and Bhutan in 2010 and came away fascinated by their way of life. We did a homestay and became the source of cash at the smallest farm I ever saw. There was a tremendous joy in a traditional way of life, full of myths and stories tied to geographic locations. A Step Away from Paradise brought me back to Sikkim and I also related to the yogi's followers who were searching for salvation in another realm. As I was reading about the trials of Tulshuk Lingpa, I was imagining him in monastic temple we had visited in the country. Sikkim is a magical place inhabited by people who believe in magic and the book reflected that. My friend from Sikkim remembers his father talking about Tulshuk Lingpa and the people who gave away everything to follow him. I loved the book and have lent out one copy and gifted another.If you're interested in this type of literature, I'm currently reading Enlightened Vagabond by Matthieu Ricard about Patrul Rinpoche a Tibetan holy man of the 19th Century. His legend is retold through interviews with acolytes.
